چکیده

Introduction While traditional imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance (MR), computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound (US) have had a dramatic impact on detection and diagnosing tissue abnormalities, their benefit in the early detection and characterization of breast cancer pathology has been limited. As a result, alternative imaging modalities designed to characterize the material properties (i.e. stiffness, conductivity, absorption, etc.) of tissue have become of great interest to the medical imaging community. One such imaging technique is known as elastography (i.e. direct imaging of tissue stiffness).

Voxel-level reproducibility assessment of modality independent elastography in a pre-clinical murine model

Changes in tissue mechanical properties, measured non-invasively by elastography methods, have been shown to be an important diagnostic tool, particularly for cancer. Tissue elasticity information, tracked over the course of therapy, may be an important prognostic indicator of tumor response to treatment. While many elastography techniques exist, this work reports on the use of a novel form of ...

Validation and reproducibility assessment of modality independent elastography in a pre-clinical model of breast cancer

Clinical observations have long suggested that cancer progression is accompanied by extracellular matrix remodeling and concomitant increases in mechanical stiffness. Due to the strong association of mechanics and tumor progression, there has been considerable interest in incorporating methodologies to diagnose cancer through the use of mechanical stiffness imaging biomarkers, resulting in comm...

Lesion segmentation and bias correction in breast ultrasound B-mode images including elastography information

Breast ultrasound (BUS) imaging is an imaging modality used for the detection and diagnosis of breast lesions and it has become a crucial modality nowadays specially for providing a complementary view when other modalities (i.e. mammography) are not conclusive. However, lesion detection in ultrasound images is still a challenging problem due to the presence of artifacts such as low contrast, sp...

A consistent pre-clinical/clinical elastography approach for assessing tumor mechanical properties in therapeutic systems

Unlike many other experimental imaging methods, elastography has enjoyed a strong link to the standard diagnostic and interventional evaluation technique of soft tissue palpation. As a result, the initial excitement about elastography quickly translated to clinical use (e.g., [1-3]) which now includes commercially available ultrasound and magnetic resonance (MR) elastography products. However, ...

Imaging of the prostate with vibro-elastography: preliminary patient results

Introduction Prostate brachytherapy has been widely used for treating prostate cancer. Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) is the primary imaging modality providing the guidance for brachytherapy. However, imaging and detection of the prostate with conventional B-mode TRUS still remains a challenging task due to the poor contrast between the prostate and surrounding tissues. Because prostate is a fir...
